About osteopathy
What is an osteopath?
Do I need a referral? No, you are able to see an osteopath without going through your GP. However if your condition is chronic (long-standing) you may be eligible for up to 5 treatments partially subsidised by Medicare. This is called a Team Care Arrangement and needs to be arranged by referral from your GP. Can I claim treatments through my private health fund? Yes, if you have extras cover you may claim directly through our HICAPS facility and only need to pay the gap. What conditions do osteopaths treat? Common conditions seen by osteopaths include low back pain, sciatica, headaches, joint pain, repetitive strain injuries, neck pain and jaw pain. In babies and children – colic, reflux, feeding difficulties, sleeping problems, constipation, growing pains, sports injuries, pain from braces/orthodontic work. See osteopathy for babies and children. What happens during a treatment? Your first visit will involve the taking of a case history, this is where we find out about your current and past health. Then a physical examination is conducted to look at your posture and range of movement. Some undressing may be required to properly assess the condition. Then depending on the findings, osteopathic treatment is carried out to address the problem. Exercises and home-based management for your condition may also be given. What do I need to bring? If you have had any x-rays or imaging done in the past or recently, it may be of benefit to bring these in with the accompanying report. Otherwise, just bring yourself! What can I expect after my treatment? Some people feel a bit tired or relaxed after a treatment, others may feel a little sore for 24-48 hours. These are both normal reactions as your body processes the treatment. Its a good idea to drink water afterwards to clear your body of any toxins that have been released and take it easy for the rest of the day. How many treatments will it take to improve my condition? For an acute (recent) problem, 3-4 treatments may be required, chronic (long-standing) conditions may take more. It depends on the nature of your condition and how your body responds to the treatment. Osteopathy is not a 'quick fix', although some people notice a dramatic improvement after only 1-2 sessions. Initially treatment may be weekly, then the treatments are spaced further apart as you improve. The goal of treatment is to have your body be able to tackle the demands placed on it without needing to rely on treatment every week. Some people find they need/want to have treatment on a regular basis for maintenance, and this can also be beneficial depending on your particular needs. If you’re unsure about how osteopathy can help you, please don’t hesitate to call for more information on 3161 2982.
